About Us

Our little story...

Hi! We’re MacKenzie & Jenna - two Yukon moms (with two adorable, demanding, tiny coworkers) looking to provide an alternative for the way Yukoners (and Canadians) shop for children’s clothing!

When we became moms, we learned very quickly how fast kiddos can move through clothing items. We've experienced, first-hand, how many super cute items only get worn two or three times before those little saplings have sprouted beyond them.

One of our favourite things is hearing the stories about the hand-me-downs we’ve received. With Little Sapling Consignment, we hope to keep writing those stories for as many articles of kids clothing we can.

Why we're doing this...

As (sometimes overly) enthusiastic thrifters ourselves, we wanted to provide Yukon families with increased access to second-hand kids clothing. We want to contribute to a slower, more sustainable way of clothing kiddos, that is gentler on the planet by keeping as much clothing out of landfills for as long as possible. We also see this as a way to make great clothing more financially accessible.

Jenna

Is there anything better, or cuter than a pair of infant’s denim overalls? Not much, except maybe Jenna! Fun, practical, and great in the outdoors, Jenna brings to Little Sapling Consignment a deep-rooted value of caring for people and for the planet. A nurse by trade, and a Mom by heart, Jenna is passionate about fostering a community of connection and care and about passing along these values to her own little sapling. Jenna sees buying second-hand as a way to be kinder to the planet and the wallet. Keep an eye out for Jenna exploring in the beautiful Yukon forest—her happy place—surrounded by birds, wildflowers, and wonder.

MacKenzie

Meet MacKenzie—an enthusiastic Yukoner, kind and inquisitive human, and a downright bomb-dot-com Mom. Little Sapling Consignment gives her another way to channel her thrifting energy (and tame the amount of ridiculously cute knit sweaters in her kiddo's closet). To her, buying second hand is an act of sustainability and community. Aside from that, being mindful of and gentle with our impact on the earth (and each other) is a core value for Mackenzie's family - and one they're already instilling in their own little sapling! If you're looking for her, MacKenzie is probably near the water or out on the trail, on skis, sled, bike, or her own two feet.

Our Principles

We are settlers of European descent living, playing, and operating Little Sapling Consignment on the territory of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation. We recognize that, as settlers here, we have a responsibility to be good guests. To us, that means learning about and respecting those whose ancestors were here long before settlers first arrived, taking care of the Land, and actively engaging in decolonization and reconciliation in our work, lives, and community. This responsibility is embedded in the foundation of what we do here at Little Sapling Consignment. The following principles help guide us and stay connected to this foundation:

People-Centred

We’re Yukoners, looking for a Yukon solution. You and your little saplings are at the heart of this business. We’re always going to want to know what you think and would find most helpful - and we’re committed to asking for your thoughts regularly.

Cultural Sensitivity

We are dedicated to the ongoing, reflexive work of unpacking the privileges being white women has provided us. We hold ourselves accountable to understanding the impact of having these privileges, staying awake to the realities of not having them, and using the power we have to shift the system.

Inclusivity & Accessibility

We are constantly asking ourselves how we can reduce barriers to quality clothing for the little saplings in our communities. All clothing is presented without gender assumptions, we aim to be price and brand inclusive, and we offer cash payment for in-person pick-ups if e-transfer is not your thing. Please reach out if there is a barrier you see that we can address.

Redistribution

Raising little saplings takes a community of resources and support. It’s important to us to support those in the community doing work  that keeps us rooted as our little saplings grow. 5% of all Little Sapling Consignment proceeds will be donated to a community agency each quarter. Check out our Instagram page to learn which community agency/charity we’ll be donating to this quarter.

Connection & Community

We’re just starting out, but part of our vision for Little Sapling Consignment is more than just an online store - we’re hoping to have a whole community of Little Saplings. Developing soul-filling relationships and connections are integral to us. Whitehorse pop-ups, meet-ups, and activities are all things we have on our future vision board. If you have suggestions for how we can help build connections and community - please reach out!

Planet-Centred

We love consignment not only because it’s nicer on the wallet - but also because it’s nicer to the planet. Through our approach to consignment we hope to:

We are humans, moms, and sometimes life is messy.

This means that our families and our tiny coworkers will always come first. Occasionally scheduled clothing drops may be delayed due to our family priorities - sickness, mental health days, or even the need to get out of town and enjoy the sunshine!
